Not once.” An internal affairs officer pulled me aside. “We don’t mean to be intrusive, but how exactly are you connected to Officer Hawthorne?” I told them the truth. We had been engaged. I’d moved away when things got too painful, never knowing what happened to the dog. I never thought any of this would circle back. The next twist came a week later. Samson started refusing orders. Not in a dangerous way—he just wouldn’t leave Marla’s side. He slept in front of the door during our visit. When they tried to take him out for a training drill, he whined and turned back.
